Volunteer Spotlight - Elaina Ellis

If you ever experience a power outage and find yourself in the dark....don't light candles, just invite Elaina Ellis to your home!

Because Elaina, whom we feature as this month spotlighted MFW volunteer, is the kind of person who always lights up a room.

Elaina has been fighting an eating disorder much of her life. In response to that struggle, Elaina began to write poetry about her journey, and share it with others. In 2007, she became a student and later a teacher at Bent, the nation's only queer writing institute. In her "day job" she managed a team of AmeriCorps volunteers.

Last year, Elaina created TumbleMe Productions, which created a show about queer experiences with body image, eating disorders, and body acceptance. Her show, "Body Love" has played three times to sold-out audiences, with proceeds going to the National Eating Disorders Association.

Elaina recently taught a series of workshops in partnership with SHIFT, emphasizing LGBTQ people working on recovery from addiction. The workshops encouraged participants to write about their families and ancestry, as well as the role of food and nourishment in their transition to being drug and alcohol free.

Last week, Elaina presented a show called SPRUNG, featuring an all-female ensemble of prize-winning young poets and musicians extolling the joys of Spring!

Her poetry presentations at the last two World AIDS Day luncheons for Multifaith have inspired us all!

Elaina is on a journey....and her travels have attracted and inspired others to find joy and recovery in learning to express their trials and triumphs in the written word.

Multifaith is pleased to salute her as a volunteer and friend!
